Description:

Mometasone furoate is a white towhite powder practically insoluble in water, slightly soluble in octanol, and moderately soluble in ethyl alcohol.

Each gram of ELOCON Cream, 0.1% contains 1 mg mometasone furoate in a white to off-white cream base of aluminum starch octenylsuccinate (Gamma Irradiated), hexylene glycol, hydrogenated soybean lecithin, phosphoric acid, purified water, titanium dioxide, white soft paraffin, and white wax

Mometasone furoate is a synthetic (manmade) steroid hormone in the glucocorticoid family of steroid hormones that is used for the treatment of nasal allergy. The naturally occurring glucocorticoid hormone is cortisol or hydrocortisone which is produced in the adrenal glands. Glucocorticoid hormones are potent reducers of inflammation (antiinflammatory). When used as a nasal inhaler or spray, medications travel directly to the inner liningof the nose, and very little is absorbed into the body to cause side effects. The FDA approved mometasone in October 1997.

Applications:

Mometasone furoate is used in individuals 2 years of age or older for control of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, an inflammation of the nose in which the inner lining of the nose swells and releases fluid (mucus). It is used for controlling symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis as well as prevention of seasonal allergic rhinitis in patients 12 years old or older. It also is used for treatment of nasal polyps in patients 18 years of age or older.

Mometasone is indicated for the alleviation of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations (with stinging and itching) of dermatosis which respond to treatment with glucocorticoides such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (affection dermic chronic, characterized by the apparition of squamous eruptions, accompanied by itching).

Nasal mometasone is employed in adults (including the elderly) and children over 2 years, diminishing the symptoms such as hayfever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and other allergies (perennial rhinitis), including nasal congestion, discharge, pruritus and sneezing.[11] Mometasone can be used two to four weeks before pollen season, reducing the severity of symptoms. It is also indicated for the treatment of nasal polyps and symptoms associated with including congestion and hyposmia in adult patients over the age of 18. It can also produce nasal drip, sensation of tickling in the throat and loss of the sense of taste and smell.
