Properties: Deep red needles from chlorobenzene, rhombs from nitrobenzene. Also described as coppery red needles with metallic sheen. Practically insol in low boiling organic solvents. Sparingly sol in aniline, nitrobenzene, chlorobenzene, quinoline. Sol in concd sulfuric acid first giving a scarlet-red color which turns olive-green on standing.
Use: Determination of boron. Used as a 0.02% soln in concd H2SO4. The olive-green soln turns blue in the presence of boron. The blue soln has an absorption max at 620 nm. Also used in the determination of silicon.
