Properties: Crystals, mp 79-82°, decompn starting at 70°. bp10 92-93°. Slight ethereal or aromatic odor and taste. Sol in 40 parts water at 40°; sol in alcohol, ether, benzene, warm petr ether; very sol in amylene hydrate. The aq and alcoholic solns dec on exposure to light; in aq soln dibromoacetaldehyde and HBr are formed, both of which are strongly irritant. Protect from light. LD50 orally in rats: 1.09 g/kg (Burtner, Lehmann).
