Properties: Yellow, lustrous almost odorless, orthorhombic crystals when fresh. Undergoes a reversible, exothermic transition at 63°; mp 99° (dec). d420 1.451. Sol in water. Decomposes in air, and is then no longer clearly sol; acquires an odor of H2S; the decomposition products contain ammonium thiocyanate, ammonium sulfide, etc.
Keep in tightly closed bottles.
Melting point: mp 99° (dec)
Density: d420 1.451
Use: Instead of H2S or (NH4)2S for pptg metals in chemical analysis; synthesis of heterocyclic compounds.
