CAS Registry Number: 3847-29-8
CAS Name: 4-
O-b-D-Galactopyranosyl-D-gluconic acid compd with erythromycin (1:1)
Trademarks: Erythrocin Lactobionate (Abbott)
Literature References: Semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic prepd from erythromycin base and lactobiono-d-lactone in water-acetone: Hoffhine,
US 2761859 (1956 to Abbott); alternate prepn and antibacterial activity: S. K. Dutta, K. S. Basu,
US 4137397 (1979 to Jadavpur Univ.). Pharmacokinetics: R. L. Parsons
et al., J. Int. Med. Res. 8, suppl. 2, 15 (1980).
Properties: White, amorphous powder, mp 145-150°. Soly in water about 200 mg/ml. Freely sol in alcohol; slightly sol in ether. pH of a 2% aq soln 6.0-7.5. A 5% stock soln can be prepd with water or glucose soln but not with NaCl isotonic soln, because NaCl at this concn precipitates erythromycin base. Lower concns of inorganic salts are compatible.
Melting point: mp 145-150°
