Vasoactive intestinal octacosapeptide is a neurotransmitter that exists in the central nervous system and intestinal nervous system. The relaxation of lower esophageal sphincter is mediated by vasoactive intestinal peptide released from the end of vagal nerve fibers. Vasoactive intestinal peptide relaxes smooth muscle by promoting the synthesis of NO by target cells. It can also be secreted by islet D1 cells as a straight-chain peptide extracted from small intestinal mucosa.
