Description:
Estradiol cypionate (INN, USAN; Depo-Estradiol, Depofemin, Estradep, many others), or estradiol cipionate, is a synthetic ester, specifically the 3-cyclopentylpropanoyl ester, of the natural estrogen, estradiol. It was first introduced in 1952 by Upjohn in the United States, and has been in widespread use since. Estradiol cypionate is absorbed more slowly than estradiol itself, and for that reason, it can be administered less often.Compared to other commonly used estradiol esters, via the intramuscular route, estradiol cypionate was found to have the longest duration of action with a duration of ~11 days, while estradiol benzoate and estradiol valerate were found to last for 4-5 days and 7-8 days, respectively.
This medication is a female hormone (estrogen). It is used by women to help reduce symptoms of menopause (such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness). These symptoms are caused by the body making less estrogen. If you are using this medication to treat symptoms only in and around the vagina, products applied directly inside the vagina should be considered before medications that are taken by mouth, absorbed through the skin, or injected. This medication may also be used by women who are not able to produce enough estrogen (for example, due to hypogonadism, primary ovarian failure).
Applications:
Depofemin is a long-effect estrogen. Compared with Estradiol Valerate, it has stronger and longer effects. It is used for the treatment of ovarian insufficiency, amenorrhea, menopausal syndrome, senile vaginitis, and prostatic cancer. The compound of Depofemin and Medroxyprogesterone 17-acetate is a one-month long-term contraceptive injection.
