Natural Alpha-Bisabolol, also known as levomenol, is extracted from the wood of the candeia tree, which grows in the south-eastern and mid-western regions of Brazil (Mata Atlantica). The candeia tree belongs to the "asteraceae" family and is an ecological pioneer plant.
Natural Alpha-Bisabolol is a clear to slightly yellowish fluid with medium viscosity and it has a slight characteristic smell of wood and flowers. It contains at least 95% of (-)-Alpha-Bisabolol, which is a monocyclic unsaturated sesquiterpene alcohol.
(-)-Alpha-Bisabolol, which is non-toxic and non-skin-irritating, has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antifungal, granulation promoting and antispasmodic properties, which makes it ideal for use in skin-care, sanitary, personal hygiene as well as pharmaceutical products. It is an effective inhibitor of fungi, Candida albicans and Gram-positive bacteria.
Traditionally, (-)-Alpha-Bisabolol was produced from essential camomile oil, which only contains about 50% of the active laevorotatory isomer. Bisabolol may also be produced by chemical synthesis. The resulting substance, however, only contains about 85% of pure Bisabolol and it is a racemic mixture of both laevorotatory and dextrorotatory isomers. Thus, the synthetic product only contains about 42.5% of the active (-)-isomer. Due to the active ingredient ratio of about 2.24:1, natural Alpha-Bisabolol provides a decisive economic benefit over the synthetic variant.
Moreover, Natural Alpha-Bisabolol does not contain any Farnesol, which is another advantage over the synthetic variants.
Due to its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antifungal, granulation promoting and antispasmodic properties, natural Alpha-Bisabolol is ideal for use in skin-care, sanitary and personal hygiene products, such as e.g.:
- Facial and personal hygiene products
- Skin protection products
- Sun protection products
- Baby care products
- After shave products
- Anti-acne products
- Deodorants
- Hair conditioners
