Properties: A dull, dark green powder, or a bright, crystalline solid. Sol in water to a green soln which becomes brownish-yellow on addn of HCl and blackish-green with NaOH. An excess of NaOH decolorizes the soln. Sparingly sol in alcohol; it dissolves in concd H2SO4 to a yellow soln which, when diluted with water, turns first yellowish-red, then green. LD50 orally in rats: >2 g/kg (Lu, Lavalle).
Toxicity data: LD50 orally in rats: >2 g/kg (Lu, Lavalle)
Use: Limited use as a dye for silk and wool fabrics; as biological stain.
